The Academy Awards: 1939
On the evening of February 29th, 1940 Vivien's film career would forever be changed. It was on this night that she received the highest acknowledgment and award in the movie industry. On this day, Vivien received her first Oscar, Best Leading Actress, for her role as Scarlett O'Hara.
Vivien arrived at the Academy Awards with Olivier by her side around 9:30PM. After four long hours of mingling, pictures, presentations, and speeches Vivien's time had arrived. At 1:15AM, now March 1st, 1940, Spencer Tracy proudly announced that Vivien had won as Best Leading Actress. Vivien gracefully made her way up to the microphones and accepted her award with great poise.
After receiving her Oscar, Vivien proudly displayed it for the rest of the evening. Unfortunately, though, due to the war, Vivien could not bring the Oscar back to London with her. So for roughly ten years, the Oscar remained with her secretary, Sonny Alexander. In 1950 when she finally was reunited with it, she ended up using it as a doorstop in her home.
Where Is The Oscar Now?
Vivien's Oscar is currently owned by a man named Jim Tumblin. He is known to have the largest and most expensive Gone With The Wind collection. Along with Vivien's Oscar, he also owns three other cast member's as well. He purchased the piece for $500,000, but it is currently valued at $2.5 million.
